Final Inspection Process for Garments (Pre-Shipment Inspection – PSI)
The Final Random Inspection (FRI) or Pre-Shipment Inspection (PSI) is a critical quality control step to ensure that finished garments meet buyer requirements before shipment. It typically follows the AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) standard (e.g., ISO 2859-1) to determine sample size and defect tolerance.
Key Steps in Garment Final Inspection
1. Sample Selection (AQL Sampling)
Randomly select samples from finished goods (e.g., Level II, AQL 2.5 for normal inspections).
Sample size depends on order quantity (e.g., 200 pcs → 32 pcs inspected).
2. Visual & Workmanship Check
Fabric defects (stains, holes, color inconsistencies, shading variation).
Stitching & seams (loose threads, skipped stitches, seam puckering).
Printing/Embroidery (misalignment, fading, incorrect logos).
Trims & Accessories (buttons, zippers, snaps – function & placement).
3. Measurement & Sizing Verification
Compare against tech pack or approved samples.
Key measurements: Chest, waist, length, sleeve, neckline, etc.
Tolerance: Usually ±1 cm (varies by buyer).
4. Functionality Test
Zippers/Buttons: Smooth operation, no jamming.
Stretch & Recovery (for knits/activewear).
Wash & Care Label Accuracy (verify against fabric requirements).
5. Packaging & Labeling Check
Polybag (correct size, thickness, suffocation warning if required).
Hangtags & Labels (branding, size, barcode, country of origin).
Carton Marking (shipping marks, quantity, weight, dimensions).
6. On-Site Tests (Optional but Recommended)
Metal Detection Scan (for hidden needles/pins in export orders).
Colorfastness Rub Test (check if dye bleeds).
Barcode Scanning (ensure accuracy for retail).
7. Defect Classification & Reporting
Critical Defects (e.g., sharp objects, safety hazards) → 0% allowed.
Major Defects (e.g., broken zipper, wrong size) → AQL limits apply.
Minor Defects (e.g., minor stitching flaws) → Higher tolerance.
8. Inspection Report & Decision
Pass: Shipment approved if defects ≤ AQL limit.
Fail: Hold shipment for rework or sorting.
Partial Approval: Ship good units, reject defective ones.
